At ELH Foundation, we recognize that effective grantmaking extends beyond financial support. Our commitment to philanthropy and voluntarism includes investing in the long-term capacity and sustainability of our nonprofit partners. Through our comprehensive capacity-building programs, we provide organizations in our funding portfolio with the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to strengthen their operations, enhance their leadership, and amplify their community impact.

Our organizational development services are designed to address the unique challenges faced by nonprofit organizations, from emerging grassroots initiatives to established community institutions. We understand that strong organizational infrastructure, skilled leadership, and sound financial management are essential foundations for achieving meaningful and lasting change in the communities we serve.

As a private grantmaking foundation dedicated to supporting religious organizations and community-focused nonprofits, we have developed a robust suite of capacity-building services that reflect our deep understanding of the sector's evolving needs. These programs are offered free or at subsidized rates to organizations within our funding portfolio, ensuring that financial constraints never prevent access to critical professional development opportunities.

Strategic Planning Assistance

Strategic planning serves as the cornerstone of organizational effectiveness, providing nonprofits with a clear roadmap for achieving their mission and vision. Our strategic planning assistance program offers comprehensive support to help organizations develop, implement, and evaluate strategic plans that are both ambitious and achievable. We work alongside nonprofit leaders to facilitate inclusive planning processes that engage board members, staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders in shaping the organization's future direction.

Our experienced facilitators guide organizations through every phase of strategic planning, from conducting environmental scans and SWOT analyses to defining strategic priorities and establishing measurable objectives. We help nonprofits articulate their theory of change, identify key performance indicators, and develop implementation timelines that align with their capacity and resources. This structured approach ensures that strategic plans are not merely aspirational documents but practical tools that drive organizational decision-making and resource allocation.

Beyond initial plan development, we provide ongoing support to help organizations monitor progress, adapt to changing circumstances, and maintain strategic focus. Our consultants offer quarterly check-ins, annual plan reviews, and facilitation services for strategic retreats. We also assist organizations in communicating their strategic direction to funders, donors, and community partners, helping them build support for their vision and secure resources for implementation.

For religious organizations and faith-based nonprofits, we bring particular sensitivity to the integration of spiritual mission and practical planning. We understand that these organizations must balance their commitment to religious values with the need for professional management and accountability. Our planning processes honor this dual commitment, helping faith-based organizations develop strategies that are both mission-aligned and operationally sound.

Board Development Training Programs

Effective governance is fundamental to nonprofit success, and strong boards provide the leadership, oversight, and strategic direction that organizations need to thrive. Our board development training programs are designed to strengthen governance capacity at all levels, from individual board member orientation to comprehensive board transformation initiatives. We offer customized training that addresses the specific governance challenges and opportunities facing each organization in our portfolio.

Our curriculum covers essential governance topics including fiduciary responsibilities, legal and ethical obligations, strategic oversight, fundraising and resource development, executive director support and evaluation, and board-staff partnership dynamics. We provide both foundational training for new board members and advanced development opportunities for experienced trustees seeking to deepen their governance expertise. Training formats include interactive workshops, facilitated board retreats, one-on-one coaching for board chairs and committee leaders, and peer learning circles that connect board members across organizations.

We place particular emphasis on helping boards develop effective committee structures, establish clear policies and procedures, and create cultures of engagement and accountability. Our trainers work with boards to assess their current performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement governance best practices tailored to their organizational context. We also assist with board recruitment and succession planning, helping organizations build diverse, skilled boards that reflect the communities they serve.

For organizations experiencing governance challenges or transitions, we offer intensive board development interventions that may include governance audits, board-staff relationship mediation, and facilitated strategic conversations about organizational direction. Our goal is to help every board in our portfolio function as a high-performing team that provides visionary leadership while maintaining appropriate oversight and accountability.

Financial Management Workshops

Sound financial management is critical to nonprofit sustainability and public trust. Our financial management workshops provide nonprofit leaders, board members, and staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain strong financial health and accountability. These comprehensive training programs cover the full spectrum of nonprofit financial management, from basic bookkeeping and budgeting to advanced financial analysis and strategic financial planning.

Our workshop series includes modules on developing and managing operating budgets, understanding and interpreting financial statements, implementing internal controls and financial policies, managing cash flow and building reserves, grant financial management and compliance, cost allocation and indirect cost rate development, and financial reporting to boards and funders. Each workshop combines theoretical knowledge with practical application, using real-world scenarios and case studies drawn from the nonprofit sector.

We recognize that many smaller nonprofits and religious organizations operate with limited financial expertise and may lack dedicated finance staff. Our workshops are designed to be accessible to participants with varying levels of financial background, using clear language and avoiding unnecessary jargon. We provide practical tools and templates that organizations can immediately implement, including budget worksheets, financial dashboard templates, and internal control checklists.

Beyond group workshops, we offer individualized financial management consultation to help organizations address specific challenges such as developing multi-year financial projections, establishing accounting systems, preparing for audits, or navigating financial difficulties. Our financial consultants work collaboratively with organizational leaders to strengthen financial infrastructure and build the capacity for informed financial decision-making that supports long-term sustainability.

Fundraising Consultation Services

Sustainable funding is essential for nonprofit organizations to fulfill their missions and serve their communities effectively. Our fundraising consultation services help organizations develop and implement comprehensive resource development strategies that diversify funding sources, strengthen donor relationships, and build long-term financial sustainability. We work with nonprofits at all stages of fundraising maturity, from organizations launching their first annual campaign to established institutions seeking to expand their development capacity.

Our fundraising consultants provide expertise in multiple areas including individual donor cultivation and stewardship, major gifts program development, annual fund campaigns, planned giving and legacy programs, corporate and foundation relations, special events and peer-to-peer fundraising, online and digital fundraising strategies, and capital campaign planning and management. We help organizations assess their current fundraising capacity, identify untapped opportunities, and develop realistic, achievable fundraising plans aligned with their mission and values.

For many organizations in our portfolio, particularly smaller nonprofits and religious organizations, fundraising can feel uncomfortable or inconsistent with their values. We help these organizations reframe fundraising as mission-driven relationship building and community engagement. Our consultation emphasizes authentic storytelling, transparent communication, and donor-centered approaches that honor both the organization's integrity and donors' philanthropic motivations.

We also provide practical support including grant writing coaching and proposal review, donor database selection and implementation, fundraising materials development, board fundraising training and engagement, and fundraising event planning and execution. Our consultants work alongside organizational staff and volunteers, building internal capacity while achieving immediate fundraising results. We believe that effective fundraising consultation should leave organizations stronger and more self-sufficient, not dependent on external expertise.

Nonprofit Resource Library

Knowledge sharing and accessible resources are fundamental to building nonprofit capacity across our funding portfolio. Our comprehensive Nonprofit Resource Library provides organizations with on-demand access to tools, templates, guides, and best practices covering all aspects of nonprofit management and leadership. This curated collection of resources has been developed specifically for the needs of community-based organizations, religious institutions, and grassroots nonprofits working to create positive change in their communities.

The library includes downloadable templates for essential organizational documents such as strategic plans, board policies, financial reports, and grant proposals. We provide step-by-step guides on topics ranging from starting a nonprofit to conducting program evaluations. Our resource collection also features case studies highlighting successful approaches to common nonprofit challenges, recorded webinars and training sessions, research reports and sector trends analysis, and links to trusted external resources and tools.

All resources in our library are carefully vetted for quality, relevance, and accessibility. We prioritize materials that are practical, actionable, and appropriate for organizations with limited staff and resources. The library is organized by topic area and searchable by keyword, making it easy for users to find exactly what they need when they need it. We regularly update the collection based on emerging sector needs, feedback from our grantees, and evolving best practices in nonprofit management.

Organizations in our funding portfolio receive complimentary access to the full resource library, while selected resources are made available to the broader nonprofit community as part of our commitment to sector-wide capacity building. We also offer personalized resource consultations to help organizations identify the most relevant materials for their specific needs and circumstances.

Mentorship and Peer Learning Programs

Leadership development and peer learning are powerful catalysts for organizational growth and innovation. Our mentorship programs connect emerging nonprofit leaders with experienced executives, board members, and sector experts who can provide guidance, support, and wisdom gained through years of nonprofit service. These structured mentorship relationships create opportunities for knowledge transfer, professional development, and the kind of reflective learning that comes from trusted one-on-one relationships.

We offer several mentorship tracks tailored to different leadership roles and organizational needs. Our Executive Director Mentorship Program pairs new or transitioning executive directors with seasoned nonprofit CEOs who can provide guidance on leadership challenges, organizational management, and professional development. The Emerging Leaders Program supports mid-level staff members preparing for senior leadership roles, while our Board Leadership Mentorship connects new board chairs and committee leaders with experienced trustees who can share governance insights and best practices.

Beyond formal mentorship, we facilitate peer learning circles that bring together nonprofit leaders facing similar challenges or working in related program areas. These facilitated groups provide safe spaces for honest conversation, collaborative problem-solving, and mutual support. Participants consistently report that peer learning circles help them feel less isolated, spark new ideas, and provide accountability for implementing organizational improvements.

Our mentorship programs are designed to be flexible and responsive to participant needs. Mentoring pairs establish their own meeting schedules and focus areas, with support from program staff who provide orientation, check-ins, and resources. We carefully match mentors and mentees based on organizational context, leadership challenges, and personal learning styles. All mentors receive training in effective mentoring practices and are supported throughout their mentorship journey.

Annual Nonprofit Leadership Summit

Each year, ELH Foundation convenes nonprofit leaders from across our funding portfolio for our signature Annual Nonprofit Leadership Summit. This multi-day gathering serves as a cornerstone of our capacity-building efforts, bringing together executive directors, board members, program staff, and community leaders for intensive learning, networking, and inspiration. The summit provides a unique opportunity for our grantee partners to step away from daily operations, engage with cutting-edge ideas and practices, and connect with peers who share their commitment to community service and social impact.

The summit program features nationally recognized keynote speakers who address critical issues facing the nonprofit sector, from adaptive leadership and organizational resilience to equity and inclusion. We offer concurrent workshop tracks covering topics such as innovative program design, technology integration, community engagement strategies, and sustainable funding models. Interactive sessions provide hands-on learning opportunities, while facilitated roundtable discussions enable participants to dive deep into specific challenges and share solutions.

Beyond formal programming, the summit creates invaluable networking opportunities. Structured networking sessions help participants build relationships across organizational and geographic boundaries, while informal gathering spaces encourage spontaneous conversations and collaboration. Many of our strongest grantee partnerships and peer learning relationships have emerged from connections made at the annual summit. We also use the summit as an opportunity to recognize outstanding achievements within our funding portfolio, celebrating innovation, impact, and leadership excellence.

The summit is offered at no cost to organizations in our funding portfolio, with travel scholarships available to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent participation. We provide both in-person and virtual attendance options to maximize accessibility. Post-summit, we share session recordings, presentation materials, and resource guides with all participants, extending the learning beyond the event itself and creating lasting value for participating organizations.

Access to Capacity-Building Services

All organizations within ELH Foundation's funding portfolio are eligible to access our capacity-building services at no cost or at significantly subsidized rates. We believe that investing in organizational capacity is as important as funding programs, and we are committed to ensuring that financial barriers never prevent our grantee partners from accessing the professional development and technical assistance they need to succeed.

Organizations can access our services through several pathways. Some capacity-building support is automatically included as part of our grant agreements, while other services are available upon request. We encourage grantees to reach out to their program officers to discuss their organizational development needs and explore which services might be most beneficial. We work collaboratively with each organization to design capacity-building plans that align with their strategic priorities, organizational readiness, and available time and resources.

For organizations not currently in our funding portfolio, we offer limited capacity-building services on a fee-for-service basis, with fees set on a sliding scale based on organizational budget size. We also make selected resources and training opportunities available to the broader nonprofit community as part of our commitment to strengthening the entire sector. Organizations interested in learning more about our capacity-building services are encouraged to contact our Organizational Development team.

Building Stronger Organizations, Stronger Communities

At ELH Foundation, we understand that sustainable community change requires more than financial resources—it requires strong, well-managed organizations led by skilled, supported leaders. Our comprehensive capacity-building services reflect our commitment to being more than a funder; we strive to be a true partner in our grantees' success. By investing in organizational development alongside programmatic support, we help ensure that the nonprofits and religious organizations we support have the infrastructure, expertise, and resilience necessary to achieve their missions and serve their communities effectively for years to come.

Through strategic planning assistance, board development training, financial management workshops, fundraising consultation, resource sharing, mentorship programs, and our annual leadership summit, we provide a continuum of support that meets organizations where they are and helps them grow toward where they want to be. These services are grounded in our deep respect for the dedication and expertise of nonprofit leaders, our understanding of the unique challenges facing community-based organizations, and our belief in the power of learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

We invite organizations in our funding portfolio to take full advantage of these capacity-building opportunities. Whether you are seeking to strengthen a specific aspect of your operations, navigate a significant organizational transition, or simply connect with peers and expand your professional network, our team is here to support you.
